EDUCATION:
Dr. Webb completed his residency in Adult Psychiatry at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, and completed advanced training at Yale University, in the School of Medicine's Child Study Center. He is currently an Assistant Clinical Professor at the Yale School of Medicine, where he teaches young psychiatrists still in training.
RESEARCH BACKGROUND:
Dr. Webb has a long background in scientific research, and in 2009 completed a highly competitive combined M.D. / Ph.D. program at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. His Ph.D. focused on Neuroscience, and he published research on how ion channels in cell membranes react to mutations and chemicals in their environment, and sometimes cause disease. He continues to be actively involved in research, and is presently collaborating with academic institutions to determine how apps and virtual reality can be used to treat mental health problems.
In 2014, Dr. Webb was awarded the Pilot Research Award for Attention Disorders through the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, which allowed him to study the ways in which stimulant medications affect otherwise healthy people. He also led the first major publication to describe stimulant use among medical students. This work has been widely cited, and he was interviewed about it on Connecticut NPR.
In 2013, he led a self-funded group of psychiatry residents in measuring whether being left-handed was more common in those with certain mental health diagnoses. He discovered a striking increase in left-handedness among those suffering from psychosis/schizophrenia, and this work was widely cited in major news media such as Time magazine online, Reader's Digest, and Science Daily.
Dr. Webb graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelors of Science in Molecular and Cell Biology from Texas A&M in 2001, and while there published research on the biophysics of ion channels that might be used to sense environmental toxins.
With a strong research background, Dr. Webb believes in exploring every option to find the gentlest and most effective evidence based treatment options for you or your child.
Additionally, Dr. Webb operates the First Principles Psychiatry clinic specializing in unusually complicated cases and 2nd opinions.
HEALTH CARE LEADERSHIP:
During his time in Colorado State Government, Dr. Webb was the Lead Author for the State of Colorado's 2017 Psychotropic Medication Guidelines for Children and Adolescents in Colorado's Child Welfare System. These guidelines were developed by dozens of academic, government, and community leaders to ensure that vulnerable youth under state care were treated with psychiatric medications in a safe, evidence-based manner. These guidelines are part of the larger statewide effort to ensure that youth in foster care were not prescribed more medications than absolutely needed.
Dr. Webb was also the Lead Author of the 2019 Colorado Guidelines for Selecting Mental Health Therapies, which was jointly developed by over 40 academic and community thought leaders from across the United States . These statewide guidelines outline how caregivers can select safe, effective mental health therapies, and avoid harmful and ineffective ones.
Dr. Webb strongly believes in the role of parents and caregivers during mental health treatment, and he led a task force in changing Colorado Rule (Volume 7) to strongly encourage knowledgeable caregivers to be available to talk to the clinician when young foster children go to their mental health appointments.
PATIENT AND FAMILY ADVOCACY:
Dr. Webb is a strong advocate for patient rights and for the involvement of family in caring for the patient. As of 2019 he serves as a Board Member for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), Colorado. NAMI is an internationally recognized non-profit leader that helps promotes the rights of patients and families suffering from mental illness.
While at Yale, he was an advocate for increased coverage of telehealth services so that rural families could have better access to mental health services, and testified to the State Legislature about this.
Dr. Webb has also done international volunteer work to promote better understanding of abuse and mental health issues, and how they can affect a person's health. He presented on this topic to the Belize Mental Health Association, and was interviewed about it on the Open Your Eyes morning talk show.
HIGH-TECH HEALTH CARE:
Dr. Webb strongly believes in the power of innovative technology to improve outcomes and lower the cost of health care. While working in Colorado, he led development of the first telehealth network for the Colorado Division of Youth Services, which greatly expanded the access of high-needs youth to mental health services. He has also been a mentor and judge for Prime Health Colorado, an organization dedicated to improving health outcomes and reducing costs by helping develop high tech startup companies focused on safety net populations. He is currently collaborating with academic institutions to develop effective, low-cost virtual reality solutions for mental health concerns.
